History of KickbacK
KickbacK started out with Ray, Howard and George getting together to jam some ‘jazzier’ R&B tunes that, for whatever reason, they hadn’t had a chance to play previously. All three are veterans of the Canadian music scene having played every style from Rock to Country, from Jazz to Blues.
Here’s a bit about each member of KickbacK.
Ray Dussome – Drums and Vocals

Ray started playing drums at the age of 12. He started gigging in the Edmonton country music scene almost immediately after getting his first drum, which was a single sparkle red snare drum. Shortly after the acquisition of the snare he moved on to a full set of drums. They were ‘sparkle orange’! He also expanded his musical playing into big band jazz and of course rock and roll.
He turned pro at age 17 and earned his living as a musician for the better part of the next 20 years. During that time Ray played drums for virtually every style of music throughout Western Canada.
About ten years ago, Ray bought a Pro Tools digital recording system. He has been recording with it when ever he finds there is time in his busy schedule.
Ray has played Rogers and Gretsch drums. These days Ray’s favorite set of drums is a kit made by Sonor called the ‘Jungle’ model with a 16X16 kick drum! Small but punchy, they underlie the great sound of his current band, KickbacK.
George Hauser – Bass Guitar, Vocals

From the first time George heard music, it was magic to him; he was driven to play.
As a teenager, George and friends would get together and exchange ideas, allowing each player to grow. Later, bands would be formed to play for dances, leading to television, concerts, and recording.
George feels fortunate and honored to have played many styles of music with so many wonderful musicians, in so many situations, in so many places. Kickback makes a good fit for him as Kickback plays a variety of styles.
George feels “What a great life I have had , with more to come, getting to play music with such great players.
Howard Gonyer – Guitar, Vocals
Howard 2008
Howard is a dynamic and accomplished musician. His versatility, humour and hard working style, nicely compliment his talents on the guitar. Well schooled in a variety of styles, he really enjoys performing.
As a young musician, he worked in show bands in New York, Miami, New Orleans and Tokyo, as well as all across Canada. These experiences gave him the desire to learn more about the fundamentals of music.
After spending this time educationally, he pursued a career of teaching and playing which eventually led to this band, “ KickbacK ”. What a pleasure it is to play with two so fully accomplished musicians, as are Ray and George.
I hope the joy we get playing music is felt by those we are fortunate to play for.
